Three teaching hospitals with distinct clinic environments offer fellows a broad range of inpatient and outpatient experiences. Fellows provide consultative service in three continuity clinics: a weekly Endocrine/Diabetes Clinic at UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest, a weekly VA Endocrine Clinic at the VA San Diego Healthcare System, and a VA Diabetes Clinic (2-3 sessions per week).
A wide variety of endocrine problems are seen, covering the spectrum of diabetes, adrenal, pituitary, thyroid, bone and mineral disorders, lipid disorders and reproductive endocrinology. Under the supervision of attendings, fellows assume progressive autonomy in assessing and managing their own panel of patients. Graduating fellows are well prepared to handle virtually any style of patient care.
Clinical rotations are detailed in the Clinical Training section on the Endocrine Fellowship at UC San Diego page.

UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest is a 286-bed hospital that serves a socioeconomically diverse population, including many patients who are otherwise medically under-served.
Outpatient clinics are located in the Medical Offices North and Medical Offices South facilities. The surgical service receives many referrals from local hospitals for endocrine-related surgeries involving thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, pancreas and the pituitary.
Thornton Hospital Complex in La Jolla serves primarily affluent communities with excellent access to medical care.
The complex consists of Thornton Hospital (a 120-bed teaching hospital), Moores Cancer Center, the Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center, the Perlman Medical Offices and the Shiley Eye Center. It will also include the 245-bed Jacobs Medical Center, opening in 2016.
The VA San Diego Healthcare System Medical Center includes a 256-bed hospital and outpatient clinics and is among the 32 VA hospitals recently ranked as “Top Performers.” It serves veterans residing in southern California, Nevada and Mexico.
It shares the same housestaff and many faculty members with UC San Diego Medical Center, and is adjacent to our School of Medicine and undergraduate campus. It will soon be connected to the Thornton Hospital Complex by a walk bridge across Interstate 5.
