Academic Track
UCSD Endocrinology Fellowship has the option for a dedicated Academic Track. This program is geared towards those interested in a career in academic medicine as a clinician educator or physician scientist. The program offers protected time for fellows to develop their skills as a clinical educator or in clinical, translational, or basic science research in order to prepare them for next steps in development of a career with an academic focus.
Year 1 - 92% Clinical/8% Academic/Research (identical to clinical track)
Year 2 - 25% Clinical/75% Academic/Research
Optional Year 3 - 25% Clinical/75% Academic/Research
* UC San Diego Endocrinology Fellowship utilizes a single ERAS application and NRMP match process for all fellowship applicants, regardless of intended training track. Applicants interested in the Academic Track may indicate their interest during the interview process if they have already identified this career focus. Fellows may also choose to explore and select a training track after matching and beginning fellowship training.
A word from a former fellow on the Academic Track:
The Academic Track enabled me to freely pursue my professional interests in medical education and quality improvement following my fellowship training. During my Academic Track year o the T32 Training Grant, I completed a formal medical education course via the Clinical Teaching Stanford Faculty Development Program and have found some of the core principles from the course invaluable to how I now teach students and trainees. Additionally, I initiated several quality improvement project interventions within both the endocrine division and in collaboration with other disciplines, which has not only improved the quality of endocrine care at UCSD Health but also propelled my academic career as a clinical faculty at the university.
